Infiniti . What Are the Functions of a Torque Converter? With continual refinement since the 1940s, torque converters comprise the vital front end of today's highly efficient automatic transmissions. Torque converters transmit driving power between engine and transmission in motor vehicles under widely varying driving conditions. They are comprised of two of spinning turbine disks immersed in transmission oil, self-contained inside a large wok-shaped housing. The one piece housing/driving disk, the pump, spins with the engine crankshaft. The driven disk, or driven turbine, is connected to the transmission. As the pump spins, it forces the oil to flow against the turbine, causing it to spin like a pinwheel in a strong breeze. This motion is transmitted through the transmission and drive train to the wheels to drive the vehicle. Multiplying Torque During acceleration or heavy pulling, the torque multiplication is greatest with the lowest output velocity, as when accelerating from a dead stop, or driving up hills. As vehicular speed increases, load decreases, and the multiplication decreases proportionately. Locking Function As less force is required, the velocity increases, and the torque converter achieves total coupling with only minimal slippage between the two disks. Most torque converters mechanically lock the output to the input at this point, increasing efficiency. Slipping Function At a dead stop, torque converters allow the engine to remain idling while still in gear. The transmission oil merely rebounds off the driven turbine without spinning it. Increasing Efficiency A small stator turbine disk between the driven turbine and pump turbine disks optimizes the angle at which the fluid is redirected to the pump blades to provide the greatest operating efficiency under any operational situation. Smoothing Power Torque converters absorb clunks, pulsations and vibrations in the driveline, creating a quieter, less stressful driving experience, and increasing vehicle longevity. Summary Torque converter operation is continuously variable between the three modes of operation -- idling, as when stopped; higher torque/ lower vehicular speed, such as when accelerating or climbing hills; and lower torque/ higher vehicular speed used when cruising. In the course of everyday driving with an automatic transmission, the torque converter will be operating somewhere in-between these basic modes, depending on how much power is being applied via the accelerator pedal. Lower torque/higher speed always provides the best mileage.
Infiniti . Symptoms of Failure in a Transmission Torque ConverterWhen you step on the clutch pedal of a manual transmission car to shift into gear, the clutch disconnects the transmission from the car's engine. In an automatic transmission vehicle, a transmission torque converter performs the function of a clutch. The transmission torque converter is an important part of your vehicle and a lot of harmful things can happen if it fails. Learn to recognize the symptoms and likely causes of a faulty torque converter. Poor Efficiency Due to Blade Deformation and Fragmentation If the pump or turbine blades become deformed or detached from the hubs due to a malfunction of the torque converter resulting in overheating, the vehicle will experience poor performance. If the problem is not rectified, it is possible that the transmission torque converter can break completely. Poor Efficiency Due to Stator Clutch Failure If the stator clutch fails, the car will have poor efficiency during the coupling phase. This happens because the stator clutch's inner and outer elements lock to each other and cannot rotate. An issue with the stator clutch such as this could also result in high fuel consumption. Warped Housing When a torque converter is used under high RPMs, ballooning can occur. The torque converter's housing can eventually warp or even rupture. Leaks Overheating can render the elastomer seals in the converter ineffective. The seals' inability to perform their intended function of holding liquid can lead to leaks. No Power An almost complete loss of power is usually the result of a breakage in the stator clutch. In this case, your car may not be drivable. *Checking is especially important if you haven't changed the coolant recently or if you've been adding a lot of plain water. Little testers (see Figure 14-3) that are cheap and easy to use tell you whether the protection level of the coolant in your system is adequate. The instructions are on the package. They usually involve drawing a bit of liquid out of the radiator into the tester. Then little balls or a float in the tester tell you whether you need to add coolant. While you're at it, also check the liquid in the tester or reservoir for rust. Or you can buy test strips that do the same thing by changing color. v0 What kind of climate you live in: If the temperature gets very cold in the winter or very hot in the summer, be sure that you have enough coolant/antifreeze in your system before extreme weather sets in. In most areas, a 50/50 solution is recommended for year-round use. If the weather turns extremely cold, you can add a slightly higher proportion of antifreeze without hurting your cooling system. Chapter 14: Keeping Your Car from Getting Heartburn Never exceed a 70/30 mixture of antifreeze to water. Freeze protection actually worsens with too much antifreeze and not enough water. If the weather is extremely hot, exceeding the recommended proportions of water and coolant won't help prevent your vehicle from overheating; it may actually cause it to overheat more rapidly. How often you use your car's air conditioner Although the air conditioner does a fine job of keeping the interior of the car cool, it raises your engine's temperature. So be sure to have a 50/50 mix during the months when you use your air conditioner most often. If, during a pre-summer check, you find that the level of coolant is very low or its protection level is weak, it may be a good time to flush your cooling system. If you don't flush the system then, make sure to check the level again at the end of autumn to see whether you should flush it before the cold weather sets in. Determining hotf much coolant you need You can consult your owner's manual, the back of the coolant jug, or the charts that coolant manufacturers supply for the number of quarts that your cooling system holds. Divide that number by two and buy that amount of coolant. Adding an equal amount of water gives you a 50/50 water/coolant mixture, which is fine for everything but extremely cold weather. If your vehicle has an aluminum engine, make sure that the coolant is marked "Safe for use on aluminum engines." If the old coolant is extended-life coolant, replace it with the same stuff. (This option is better than following the instructions in this section, because air is less likely to be trapped in the system after you finish the job.) If you don't have a manual or it lacks such instructions, follow these steps to flush your cooling system and change the coolant without endangering the environment: 1. Park the vehicle in a safe place, away from children and small animals. Make sure that the engine is cold, the ignition is off, and the parking brake is on.
